Data from ACT Research, a provider of data and analysis for trucks and other commercial vehicles, released this week found that net orders for commercial trailers were up nearly 40 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, while used truck volumes in December were up compared to November but down annually.

Rare is the news day that passes without mention of the proposed Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline. In fact, just as I was about to send this article to the Logistics Management editors, news broke that President Obama rejected the proposed route for the KXL. Of course, this is not the last we will hear of the project. The route will be revised and resubmitted for review, and we will soon revisit the issues surrounding the KXL.

Logistics technology provider Descartes recently announced it has acquired GeoMicro Inc., a provider of advanced geographic information systems (GIS) and commercial turn-by-turn navigation.

TransCore said its North American Freight Index for December saw an 11 percent gain on an annual basis and represented the second highest freight volume for the month of December since 2005.
